Our Work

Offering Hope and a Future

Tragically, millions of orphaned and vulnerable children around the world lack food, shelter, clothing and schooling. Some are abandoned by parents who battle drug addiction or alcoholism, while others are left on the streets because their families are simply too poor to care for them. Regardless of the reasons, the message these children hear is always the same: You are unwanted, you are alone in the world, and you matter to no one.

The harsh realities for these children are staggering. Those fortunate enough to live in orphanages may not receive health care, education and other necessities. Orphans are often “warehoused” in institutions until they are released to the streets at age 16. Without homes, education and job skills, these young teens are unprepared to find work. In desperation, many resort to crime and prostitution just so they can have food to eat and a place to sleep. The hope of a happy life remains a distant dream.

With the help of generous partners, we demonstrate the love of Jesus in tangible ways to help lift these children out of hopelessness and despair and take them from at-risk to thriving. Through a holistic approach, we provide education, nutrition, safe refuge, as well as physical, emotional and spiritual healing; our training centers prepare at-risk youth for independent living; and our self-sustainability programs provide microenterprise business opportunities to keep families together.

In the following video, watch how lives are being changed as we offer hope for a bright future to orphaned and vulnerable children across the globe.

Without the gift of education, a child’s life is extremely limited. Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and is essential for any child to have a secure future. That’s why we are committed to providing an education for the children we serve so that their hopes and dreams can truly become a reality. We are partnering with ministries throughout Africa to provide an education for more than 3,000 children each month.

In Kenya, we are partnering with a ministry that is committed to educational excellence. Through the intervention of a loving church, 75 boys and girls who were once neglected are now thriving. In addition to having their physical, spiritual and emotional needs met, they are receiving a quality education from an experienced and caring staff. With their basic needs provided for, these children are able to focus on and excel in their education, and many of them rank at the top of their classes. One student is now attending medical school, another is enrolled in nursing school, and four more have been accepted to university.

Eric, Alice and Eunice felt the hopelessness and despair of living under horrible conditions at an orphanage run by a group of corrupt individuals. In the following video, watch how God stepped in miraculously through the intervention of a loving church—along with the quality education provided by Orphan’s Promise—to bring these children out of bondage and into true freedom.

When you think of helping orphans, you traditionally picture young children. In Ukraine, however, where our work first began, the greatest need is with older orphans who are aging out of orphan care. These teens have no idea how to live independently because everything has been provided for them in the institutions they’ve lived in. They don’t know how to cook, manage money, or manage a household. At the same time, there are negative voices vying for their loyalty—alcoholism, gambling and prostitution. Approximately 70% of these orphans in Ukraine are swept up in such social evils, and that’s a statistic we’re determined to change.

Our Training Centers provide English language, computer, and life skills training to help these children adjust to independent life and find employment. We opened our first training center in Kiev, Ukraine, in 2005. Today these training centers are serving thousands of children, not only in Ukraine but in other countries throughout Europe. Just this year, more than 4,000 students received an education in 19 "School of Life" training centers in Ukraine, Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia.

They say if you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. But if you teach him to fish, he will eat for a lifetime. In addition to caring for orphaned and vulnerable children through our training centers and education programs, we are teaching people, in a way, how to fish. Many children become orphans not because they’ve lost one or both parents, but because their parents cannot afford to take care of them. Our Keeping Families Together program provides microenterprise opportunities and helps parents learn business skills so families can stay together.

Self-sustainability projects in Thailand In Thailand, a single mother with two young children had no way to earn a living and therefore care for her children. She began attending a sewing program at a home we support that provides parenting and vocational skills. Here, she learned to make clothes and bags. Once she graduated, our Keeping Families Together program was able to bless her with two sewing machines so she could start her own business. While many would have been satisfied with those results, she didn’t want to stop there. She realized God had blessed her so that she could bless others. Today, she has opened the doors of her shop and hired other women in the community. She has provided a safe and encouraging place where the women can work and provide for their families.

This is the legacy of community transformation that Orphan’s Promise is honored to be part of. By offering a hand up rather than a hand out, we are restoring a sense of dignity and self-worth to many parents who have felt hopeless because they were unable to provide for their children. As a result, the cycle of poverty is being broken.

In the following video, watch how we helped another young mother expand her small business so that she could raise her children instead of being forced to leave them to take a better paying job far away.
